Steve Rubel blogged early this morning (must have been really early) about Technorati’s new WTF (Where’s The Fire) product, which promptly disappeared. Mathew Ingram makes some comments on this as well, but I really think this is a case of trying something out and it not really being ready for primetime and leaking out. Did you guys think we wouldn’t find it?
Now can this compete with Digg? Eh, I don’t know. I’ve never been a big fan of Digg. As I’ve been using Google Reader more (and shared items) I think there is a potential there.
Time will tell.
Update: Time has told. I saw that Niall had a post about WTF so undaunted by previous "this page doesn’t exist" errors, I clicked. OMG, it was there. Really there and … Yawn. Sorry I don’t think this is going to catch on. Niall describes this a something like mini blog posts:
Technorati WTF is a mini-blog post aimed at a specific audience. Bloggers who used to try and summarize the top search results on their own blog and attract the attention of searchers can now add a note and possibly gain a reputation directly on the Technorati search result page. It’s a OneBox-like placement for the knowledge search item best matching your query.
It’s supposed to be something like people giving some context to search results. Maybe commenting on an issue or topic. So this isn’t like Digg. I guess it’s more like, oh since you’re searching for something, here’s a tidbit about it …
Dunno. Maybe I’m missing something.
