Scamming the Skeptic

I was eating a sandwich at my desk from Arby’s, actually a wrap as I’m trying to eat healthy, and in the bag is a game card. Now I am usually a skeptic when it relates to those gamecards, and I rarely redeem them later if I were to actually win something anyway, but I decided to play along as I talked on the phone.

There are three scratch boxes and the instructions read “Scratch off one (1) of the boxes below and win a chance to drive like the pros!” In microscopic print below that is says, “Void if more than one box is exposed”. They probably weed out 1/2 the winners with that statement.

I tried to work all of my powers of psychic ability trying to garner the correct box that must be scratched in order to win my chance to drive like a Nascar Pro! I guess they have never seen me drive to work, I could teach those guys a few things. Slowly and carefully I scratched the right hand box, not wanting to accidently scratch another box by mistake.

“Please Play Again”

Damn. Oh well, let’s see which box had the winner. I now scratched recklessly knowing that I was voiding any chance of redeeming the winner. I scratched the middle first then the left.

“Please Play Again”

“Please Play Again”

What the hell kind of game is this? I was suppose to be able to win a chance to drive. I’ve been robbed, they scammed me! They told me that one of the boxes was a winner! None of them was the winner! They used my valuable brain power to play a game with no chance of winning? I feel like that guy standing in front of the 3 Card Monty table wondering what happened to his rent. I suppose it served its purpose, I had to click through, I wanted to see, but why do I feel so violated?

I think I know you. You were in front of me ordering the last batch of mozzerella sticks.

Isn’t it contest fraud to not be able to win the contest? Didn’t McDonald’s get in trouble because the Monopoly game was rigged by the security staff a few years ago?

Getting three play again spots on a game card would make me consider never going back to the restaurant.

    Deliberate Chaos

The game said “Scratch off one (1) of the boxes below and win a chance to drive like the pros!” even though it said please try again doesnt mean you lost. They all said please play again because they knew you would scratch all the boxes to see which one said you won so you voided the ticket. If you had only scratched one box even though it said please play again and turned it in you would have won.
