My Big Brother Google or Why Scoble Gives Me Nightmares

Thanks to Mr. Scoble, I am now having nightmares. We all joke about big brother watching us, but so far we have been able to keep some of our privacy. This statement is slowly becoming untrue as Wifi technology becomes more advanced. In an article by Seth Jayson (requires email) at The Motley Fool, he discusses Google and their new rollout of Wifi service and the possible implications that has on the mining of information. Google of course is one of the top search engines available, because it mines metadata for relevance for its ads. This is where they derive their income. Imagine if that algorithm used by Google was now able to mine information from each of us as we sit at the coffee shop surfing the internet. They will be watching us click on that article about the latest computer, the downloading of that new song and the news story about the latest in home mortgage loans. The information obtained and the data that could and would be compiled with that information would be priceless to big companies. The marketing and advertising of products would take a whole new turn.Privacy? Google does have its privacy statement but as we enter into this “brave new world” of search, do the search companies have the power to protect us from themselves? There goes another sleepless night, but I’m sure that someone may be up with me…..watching.

Google is the big brother? and I thought RFID was the big brother :-) . Privacy issue is a losing battle, that no one can win unless ofcourse you are staying in a jungle or on a remote island.

If you are logged on to Gmail, Google is already able to track your searches based on your e-mail address. So be ready for a “brave, new, and open world”.
