If you’re looking for an SEO boost, social networking sites aren’t the ticket

Joe Lewis has a headline on WebProNews that could easily be misconstrued as all social media is bad.  When I think “social media” I think blogging, YouTube, Flickr, etc.  Joe is, however talking really just about Digg.  He makes a valid point, social networking and linking sites are just not the place to try to get your viral campaign or SEO boost.

In fact, why did anyone think it was a good idea to put stock in the mob mentality of sites like Digg in the first place? I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again, social media is a virus, which is (albeit semantically) totally different from being viral.
In his day, Alexander Hamilton made the assertion that “the masses are asses” and if left to their own devices, wouldn’t be capable of accomplishing very much. When looking at communities like Digg, that sentiment seems to ring truer than ever.

Truly, sites like this are almost organisms themselves.  Societies for sure.  Essentially you can’t force or buy popularity on Digg, unless of course you want to find yourself in a blogstorm.

Blogs, however, are a completely different beast.  Especially when it’s your blog you’re talking about.

    Hey Tris,

I think social media, social bookmarking and social networking sites are moving marketing away from the “scientific” approach to marketing where you target keywords and things like that - and moving on to building relationships. So a whole new paradigm shift is required!

Kian, I think you are right on the money. I think the main crux is that social media can’t be forced. It has to occur naturally. And to do that you do have to change your mindset to open that communication. Of course, I think blogs are the best way to do this … but I’m biased.
