Jory shouts from the rooftops (careful, don’t slip) that the consulting company Deliotte has launched the Women’s Initiative Blog (WIN) with the laudable aim of helping women balance life and work I love this intro paragraph:
The headline is a wee-bit deceiving: there are no secrets to having a brilliant career AND family life. But THAT is the big secret: There is no perfect balance, no blissful state of "having it all". Rather, women must continually pick and choose their battles, their moments to prioritize one over the other. Success is actually being at peace with this ever-alternating dynamic.
Totally. Being a guy (yes I’m a guy, Tris is short for Tristram, thank you) I certainly haven’t had the struggles that women have had in their careers. I can however empathize with them. Men have similar battles. Time earning money, time with family. Jory really ties the problem for women like this:
This is one of the scams perpetuated after the Feminist Movement. Sure, women deserve careers, but we haven’t yet been exonerated from being human. We are allowed to hang onto the "privileges" of top positions in the workplace, provided we sweep our other niggling details–children, leisure, sleep–under the rug. Unfortunately, the rug has become quite lumpy. It’s almost impossible to walk on, and yet corporations still insist upon this standard.
Yes this might be a risky step for Deloitte (as Jory concedes), but one I think is important for corporations to take. You want the best talent? You want to keep them? You want women to contribute? Well, give them a place to help each other. Makes sense to me. Now, let’s see if Deloitte can walk the walk as the blog the talk.
