Actually that headline is somewhat misleading, but as I read further into Dave Winer’s post about the new Techmeme 100, I had this picture in my mind of Dave playing away and Technorati imploding on itself. I have always been a very big fan of Technorati. I was religious about checking Technorati everyday, heck for that matter checking it multiple times a day to see who was linking to any of my blogs, about what was the hot topic of the day and who was linking to what and why.
Dave points to a scoop by Mike Arrington at TechCrunch about Techmeme launching a new service that will rank blogs in a new Top 100 list. As the A-list feeds on itself to see who can get on the list, I have been looking over the other people talking about this new list. I wish Gabe Rivera luck as he launches this new tool, I think Techmeme is only going to get better.
It makes me wonder what is in store for the likes of Technorati and how they will continue to be seen as the cool tool for bloggers (enter bugle “taps” playing here). They have been under attack by many in the past for their lack of providing an accurate application, yet most people use it because it is the only game in town. Sure there are other tools like Ice Rocket and others, but Technorati was the brand of blog search, like asking for a Kleenex when all you want is a tissue. Dave Sifry has left the building and it looks like they may be in trouble, but I hope they regroup and rise from the ashes and be able to silence the critics. I wonder if Dave Winer actually knows how to play the violin?
