BTW…I’m going to do some posts here and some posts on my personal blog … just to mix it up a bit.
Damn, I was chatting too much outside (the conversations outside the hall are always more interesting than the ones inside…no matter how cool the speaker is) and missed Darren’s intro…
Geek ways to do good. Good … like this …
Nabuur tapping into global, international experts to help small third-world companies, etc with tasks, etc (business plans, whatever).
Personally I like to help charities and such close to home with websites, basic techiness, etc.
Geekcorps.org think Peace Corps for geeks … set up computers, networks, training, etc. Could be cool. I think I like the local stuff and stuff from home.
Interesting economic argument, earn more, donate more. Denmark, give little, volunteer lots … North Americans … inverse.
Darren’s examples of buying virtual trees and virtual yaks in Second Life to then buy real trees and real yaks.
The basis of the idea, which I know will be touched on tomorrow, is the paucity of currency (the real stuff) in the world.
What about the “Happiness index” … anyone care to Google-Wikipedia this … laughter and happiness is good. Of course … how can we help others to be happy?
NothingButNets.net … $10 USD to buys a mosquito net etc to help prevent malaria in Africa and other places. They became a pyramid scheme for good. These can generate huge amounts of money for good.
Then there are projects like Tom’s Give Meaning. Get groups together to do good.
Darren took his chance to say “and here’s my project to promote…” to say that we need to do more. If you’re doing good … keep it up. If you’re not, start. What, and given the opening talk, is better advice than that?
“Darren Barefoot: He was a good ancestor”.
