Diversity in Hawaii

One of the things that most of the local people here discuss is its diversity.  Many of the differernt cultures all come together be it tahitian, polynesian, portugese, japanese, chinese or other ethnic backgrounds, they all have their own language, philosophy and look. The same goes for resorts, hotels and other places we have been staying at here in the Hawaiian Islands. 

Some resorts are more into amenities like soap and lotions and spas, whereas others are more into the resort itself with, where it is located and what things you can do while there?  It has been interesting to note the different corporate look and feel so far between the Royal Hawaiian we stayed at our first night, the Grand Hyatt and now the Marriott.  Each has its own corporate culture underlying the Hawaiian experience.  I have had some very nice things about each of the hotels and some not so nice things, but that is after all the diversity I speak of.

As bloggers we have a different approach to our experience.  We are not just here to relax and have a good time but weare also here to create and produce some qaulity content.  I for one have been trying to live stream my experience and have my viewers go along for the ride, but that has proven nearly impossible since I have not been able to stay connected to the Internet for more than about 10 minutes at a time.  I actually received a nasty note from the Marriott as it thought I might be producing questionable content using their lobby Wifi.  Huh?  I’m promoting your hotel and resort…questionable? Not everyone is into the experience of blogging yet but they will be soon enough.  After all the Marriott does have a blogger.

I am now thinking that bringing my own Wifi with a broadband card is the way I should have gone.  That is of course until we go today to visit a volcano where even "my network" cannot reach.

A New Color Blue

I stood on the bow of the catamaran and the wind and salt cleansed my face of stress and renewed my belief that you can truly feel the tension leaving your body. I was quiet except for the sea and the beauty before me.   I cannot begin to describe the surroundings and the feeling, so I will let you come and experience it yourself.

Raiders of the Lost Ark, King Kong, South Pacific, Six Days Seven Nights, and Jurassic Park, this is but a small list of the movies that have been filmed here in the beauty of Kauai.  I stood in my spot looking up to the cliffs and then waterfalls and the foam being formed by the waves crashing against the rocks and could see why the big screen wants this awe to be portrayed. I wanted to describe one more thing.  The water.

I had a hard time figuring out what color the water was here.  I had the opinion of others, a Navy Commander, a man from New Mexico and my other fellow travelers. They all said soe sort of blue, but I had to have a name of it. It was dark, but bright and had with it an awesomeness.  I could not think of the blue that I saw, then the Captain said a word.  A Hawaiian  word that triggered a response in my head.  It has nothing to d with color and in fact means "ginger" in the local language but if I had to put a crayon in  a box and put acolor on its side that emulates that color or blue, I had found he description–Awapuhi Blue.  With due respect to the local people and to Paul Mitchell, I had come up with a description and a catchy nam for my blue. Whenver i describe this blue, my own mind will drift to that colora dn then I will forever have it etched in my database.  Thank you Hawaii and to the land island of Kauai for this memory.

Great Expectations Hawaiian Style

I was not sure what to expect when I got off the plane.  Only that is was an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.  Well all that and more hit me as I went outside to walk a short distance for my bags.  84 degrees and BEAUTIFUL.  A short ride to the Royal Hawaiian hotel and I was greeted by a friendly staff wiuth a lei and a shot of punch and ice cold towel.  My first question of course was "Wifi?".  Free here in the lobby was their response.  I wanted to drop everything and record the experience but headed back to my room for a quick check on the Nuggets and Lakers score.  Hey, I am a homer through ad through and I have to get the score since I’ll be joining some people tonight from Laker land. 

I am going to check the livestream situation soon and hopefully get everyone up and running on that.  In any event, I will get the flip cam at the ready and plenty of pics.  I already took a few from my limo ride (snicker…yeah I know).  My latest addiction however is slowly taking hold.  My new best friends Neenz Faleafine and Melanie Kosaka (or new dealers perhaps) from here locally have me hooked on a new type of drug…I call it Cracadamia nuts.

My expectations so far?…hold on while I eat another handful.

A Social Media Trip To Hawaii

The one where I get you to decide what I will do in Hawaii and then hopefully you too can go along…virtually.

I am hoping to live stream the events on my site at Social Mediasphere TV! I will record as much as possible the events that unfold. You choose where and what I go do it and bring you the experience through the live blog account, the recordings and Twitter stream!

Crazy Times For Social Media and Patience is Virtuous

I have seen quite a shift recently in the way that companies are handling their social media needs.  I am seeing companies that before only though social media was a fad and that it was the marketing gimmick du jour, are now embracing the idea that this new type of online participation is here to stay.  This is not by any means surprising.  Many of the things that I have been preaching over the last 5 years are continuing to be something that seems to work in the online world.

The crazy times I have been experiencing are trying to keep up with the demand.  This is not a bad thing in this type of economy.  The other problem I have had is adjusting to the needs of clients. They for years never wanted anything to do with social media and now they seem to want the magic overnight. I have a difficult time explaining that social media is not a silver bullet and not something that is implemented and like the magic beans grows a stalk to the promise land overnight.

It is not too late to beginning a social media program at your own company and in fact the longer you wait the longer it will take to see the benefits.  Those that hopped on the bandwagon a few years back are  just now seeing the fruits of their labor.  Social Media takes time.  The participation in communities and earning of trust is not something that can be done on Monday and the fruits of that participation are seen on Friday.  That is not to say that those stories don’t happen but they are rare in any sense. Get started today.  Okay, maybe not today as I am still trying to catch up from yesterday!

New Media Marketing? Is it taking a backseat?

Just reading over at Profy and Svetlana Gladkova asking the question, "Twitter is a Popular Marketing Tool?".  The analysis is interesting on Svetlana’s piece and I think you should read it.  The thing that caught my eye was less about the written words and more about the graphic she had in the post.

The thing that made me note this graph was the far right three forms of online tools being used, blogs, podcasts and Twitter.  I preach of course that these are the "new media" and that companies should be embracing them, but it is nowhere near the use of direct mail.  I was amazed at the lopsided view of this. Twitter is the new media darling and blogs are making somewhat of a comeback since breaking on the scene at the beginning of the century.  I am curious how the study was conducted and as I understand it it was conducted by WebTrends.  The study appears to address only the European companies but I think that the results can be indicative of what is happening here as well.  As the economy keeps dipping and we go back to the "what works" idea of marketing, I see the testing of social media to be take a backseat to the more measurable results of the past.

One By One Media Heading South For The Winter

Perhaps that is not as much of a migration as it is a business trip for me.  I am headed to Miami tomorrow to speak at Wordcamp Miami and attend BarCamp Miami and Future of Web Apps ’09.

I will be speaking at Wordcamp Miami as I did in Las Vegas on "Blogging for A Living", it is a presentation that I have given a number of times and therefore I wont have to prepare more than my usual, but more importantly, and perhaps more fun I will be doing a live radio show from BarCamp Miami courtesy of my client i-Lighter. 

You can follow along and be a part of things as well.  My show Social Mediasphere via Blog Talk Radio will have the live coverage of the event.  This is my first try at doing a live radio show, although I have been on Blog Talk Radio live while I was at Blog World Expo last year.

I’ll be interviewing attendees, speakers and whoever might happen by the table.  I have been sent some podcasting equipment and I will be hopefully not embarrassing myself with my non-technical skills.  You can join in on the fun.  I want to have as many people participate as possible.

After the fun on Sunday at Barcamp Miami, I’ll be attending the fun at FOWA ’09 or the Future of Web Apps.  This event has some real dynamite personalities that are speaking at the event and hopefully I will get a few of them to stop by and be a part of the live radio show as well.  This show will be done on Blog World Expo Radio via the Blog Talk application as well so I would really enjoy it if you participated.  I will be live blogging the event as I can via the Blog World Expo Blog so stay tuned.

Businesses Must Resist Twitter Urge

I don’t specifically mean that businesses should resist the idea that their company should have a presence on Twitter, quite the contrary. Twitter is a wonderful tool to adopt for using in your social media arsenal.

I get a large number of Twitter followers every day which comes to my inbox. Some of those Twitter users are merely robots out to get some other benefit to Twitter besides its main purpose, and others yet are businesses trying to use the tool. I don’t specifically use the auto-respond feature of Twitter because I want to vet each and every follower I have in my community.

The “urge” I discuss in the title here is the idea that Twitter is another way to shove your message down the throat of consumers or customers like other uses of direct marketing tools. Twitter is not to be used as a pulpit or a soapbox and should not be used to broadcast noise. I see many businesses immediately using Twitter to get people to come to their site and buy their products. They give out coupons, links to pages, links to the store and e-commerce site. Not a single conversation is taking place. Not a link to something that might interest me about their industry, not something about them that might make me interested in their company, and not something that makes me want to click through.

Twitter is tough to implement as I have said before, but using it in the way I am seeing is only making it more difficult for others to use. Resist the urge.


Social Media and Participatory Marketing

Marketing has taken a new look as we enter the digital age. Companies are now looking for a new way to reach customers. They are reaching them in different ways because their customers are finding them in different ways. With everyone, even my 84 year old grandmother, searching the global market through Google, and getting recommendations from every friend in Facebook, Myspace, YouTube and in circles like Twitter with their options to buy or find services and products, businesses are clamoring for the attention of people. The new look and feel of marketing is participation, or what I have been calling participatory marketing.

Social media is really nothing more that participation in a social structure using different tools. All of the vehicles I mention above are merely a community of people. Like a block party where everyone gathers. An online neighborhood. They talk about their lives, they talk about their kids, they stand around the water cooler now known as their computer screen. They talk about you, your business, your product and your service.

Companies are trying to work their way into these communities now and they want to be the most noticed person at the party. The problem is that many of them are doing it wrong. They participate in the community but don’t provide anything of value. I’m not talking about walking into the party and handing out coupons for $5 off your $100 ice cream scoop. That is the way most are doing it. I’m talking about actually participating. Getting into a community of us Daddies and talking about how your 6 month old kept you all up all night is the conversation starter and ice breaker that works to get an in, but again companies open with that and then turn around and say, “Now download my sidebar widget thingy.” Again, what does that have to do with a sleepless night unless my 6 month old is put to sleep by your product? It takes a while for you to be in the group before I want to be approached for life changing conversations, like here let me help you buy a new home. Perhaps I should be calling this Kumbaya Marketing.

It takes a while for you to be in my group long enough to give me marital advice or if you want me to buy your stuff. Some of the companies have already been in my group a while. Some of the big brands and major companies are a part of our everyday lives and they can leverage that into instant credibility. If you come to my community for instance and say hey look at this cool Mac Book Pro, chances are we will all look and perhaps buy. If you want me to send you $100 to have me try your latest blue pill that will change my life, I will probably have to get to know you first.

No they are not a client, but they are a cool company that is using social media. They have been in my community a little. Now if I could get them to send me a new Blackberry case with the actual Blackberry in it.

Speaking of Blogging For A Living At Las Vegas and Wordcamp

I’ll be headed to Vegas this week to talk to people at CES and will be also headed to Affiliate Summit the first part of next week. Sandwiched between and/or during those events, I am lucky enough to attend and speak to attendees of WordCamp Las Vegas.

My discussion is one i have had before on Blogging For A Living. I will be providing the information to people on Sunday at the end of the event, and to say the least there is an all-star lineup of talent all weekend that will be presenting ahead of me and I cannot wait to see some of the great stuff that will be talked about while there. This is the event’s first year and I’m impressed with how much they have accomplished. John Hawkins should be commended for his hard work and the way he has leveraged the Consumer Electronic Show and the Affiliate Summit to help him with the attendance.

If you are going to be in Vegas for either of those events, take some time out to see some of the people speaking, and to hang out with the WordPress people that are attending. Save your $20.00 at the tables and spend it on this event instead. Register before the event as there will not be a way to get in the event at the door. In addition if your company is looking for a way to get some inexpensive exposure, i know that this is a great way to help promote yourself and they are still taking last minute sponsorships.
