Just A Walk In The Park

We kept driving up, up and up some more.  As we finally reached the summit where the lodge was located we were at our destination.  Then we headed to the trail head where we went down, down, down and more down until we saw the most breathtaking drop off and steep canyon walls you can have without a helicopter ride.

"Stay away from the edge," I heard a few times as I thought to myself that seemed obvious.  Obvious until I kept wanting to see the bottom, but we were so high that might have been tough.   The views were difficult to get focused in a camera as the depth perception was a tough thing to capture.

The dirt was a dark brown and reddish color where we get the idea of the "Original Dirt Shirt" color from in the shops where you can buy t-shirts, and it was ash and gravel mix.  The best part was getting to eat a flower as I walked on the trail and see some of the vegetation.  But by far the coup de grace was of course the waterfalls.  Our guide was pleasant and had lots of information and in fact I wanted to go on other tours that they offer like Kayaking on the Ocean and some of the other hiking things but that is probably for another trip.  You can see the lodge where we were and get a chance to see the "Hawaiian Emus" that watched us eat lunch.  Yes, Hawaiian Emus, that is for my hiking companion Melissa.

Tropic Thunder Blogger Style

We hopped into the back of an army person ell carrier and like soldiers heading off to battle we had our gear, harnesses and helmets.  The wet weather was welcome because it kept us cool and hydrated as the anticipation sucked the water from our system making us swallow hard.  This would normally be the description from a military blogger, but this describes the scene as we headed off to our zipline adventure.

I wasn’t really nervous about being dangled over the jungle until they told us a few of the details.  The highest line was 250 feet above the ground and the longest line was more than 3 football fields at 941 feet.  They had what they referred to as the "bunny line" taking it from the idea of a bunny slope in a ski area, and then the next 6 lines were for the professional zipliner.

One of my fellow travelers and I both knew we were in trouble when we thought it would be cool to do a video of us zipping through the jungle on our lines, and they indicated that if we dropped our flip cameras they would be gone forever.  Yes that is a long time.  I was hoping at this point that we would not drop ourselves and be gone forever.  The thing is this adventure is probably more safe than any other excursion I was doing while here in Hawaii.

After our safety discussion we put our helmets on and went into battle.  Not the battle you would normally associate with war, but we had to battle the thrill and excitement of dealing with a rush of adrenaline and fun that went with this excursion.  I highly recommend this type of adventure to those of you that love the thrill of letting go and giving up control of nature.  Gravity works to your advantage sometimes and you can gather in the beauty and feel a rush all at the same time.  Thanks to the folks at Kauai Backcountry Tours for making our time there safe and enjoyable.

I gave the a little advice while I was there.  They need to be able to upload video or photos to family and friends back home.  So they need that router to be installed for Internet access.  I’m kidding of course, but to be able to have a sign waving behind the last guide that says thank you and come again might be a great way to have people upload that picture to Flickr!

80% of the movie Tropic Thunder was filmed on this property!

A New Color Blue

I stood on the bow of the catamaran and the wind and salt cleansed my face of stress and renewed my belief that you can truly feel the tension leaving your body. I was quiet except for the sea and the beauty before me.   I cannot begin to describe the surroundings and the feeling, so I will let you come and experience it yourself.

Raiders of the Lost Ark, King Kong, South Pacific, Six Days Seven Nights, and Jurassic Park, this is but a small list of the movies that have been filmed here in the beauty of Kauai.  I stood in my spot looking up to the cliffs and then waterfalls and the foam being formed by the waves crashing against the rocks and could see why the big screen wants this awe to be portrayed. I wanted to describe one more thing.  The water.

I had a hard time figuring out what color the water was here.  I had the opinion of others, a Navy Commander, a man from New Mexico and my other fellow travelers. They all said soe sort of blue, but I had to have a name of it. It was dark, but bright and had with it an awesomeness.  I could not think of the blue that I saw, then the Captain said a word.  A Hawaiian  word that triggered a response in my head.  It has nothing to d with color and in fact means "ginger" in the local language but if I had to put a crayon in  a box and put acolor on its side that emulates that color or blue, I had found he description–Awapuhi Blue.  With due respect to the local people and to Paul Mitchell, I had come up with a description and a catchy nam for my blue. Whenver i describe this blue, my own mind will drift to that colora dn then I will forever have it etched in my database.  Thank you Hawaii and to the land island of Kauai for this memory.

Drinking From The Paradise Firehose

I always make fun of drinking from the "social media firehose." People always ask how I can possible follow nearly 8,000 people on Twitter, and read 10,000 RSS feeds a week, and on and on. I have developed the skill over time.  Being here in Hawaii is a lot like drinking from the Paradise Firehose.

Last night I was asked this question a number of times…"so what do you think so far?"

My response to that was usually a single word.  Awesome, super, crazy, beautiful, hot, an I coul dgo on and on at the number of superlatives I used to describe my experience so far here in the Hawaiian Islands.  I cannot begin to describe the breathtaking views I had last night as the sun set behind us and we had an opportunity to listen to the local culture unfold in front of us. I took a number of pictures that I will get loaded and if a picture is a 1000 words, they will all be superlatives.

As I write this post at 4:00 a.m. in the morning, I am still seeing images and can smell the experience and even taste the things that I did last night with Chef Colin at te Rumfire.  Today we are off to another island (Kaui) and the rand Hyatt.  They have a huge benchmark to meet but somethng tells me that wont be too hard.

As a social media business aside, everyone here is Twitter crazy. Last night I explained Twitter to a large number of folks all wanted to find out how to get on and what to do when they do. It is a crazy ride we are having here and they are loving the idea of talking to everyone.  I think that if they could bring everyone here for a moment, they would.  I would just say that 140 characters is not going to do it for me.

A Test For Monetizing Your Blog With Qumana

As a social media consultant, I don’t actually rely on ad revenue from my blog, i.e. Google Adsense or the like to pay my bills.  If I did, I would have gone back to working in the law as I was before.  I am helping out the folks at Qumana, the blog editor I am testing, with a revival of an old feature.  I used to be back in the day when I was first introduced into Qumana that we had ads that were served using the blog editor and that no longer became viable. For a little bit I am going to feature some ads here in the posts, not because I want to make the big dollars and show you my six figure check the likes of a Darren Rowse at Problogger.net or like Shoemoney.  I am doing it to help out a company that will help out bloggers.  We are always here to help bloggers become better bloggers.  That in turn helps companies that want to hire a blogger or bloggers that go on to get real jobs as bloggers.  I will let you know more as they are ready to launch these things again and will let you know my review of their service and offering.

Social Media and the Child of Television

I have always been a child of television.  I was born at the height of when television broke on to the scene as the next big thing, and I was doused with it’s essence from day one.  To that end I have some things that are a part of my DNA I believe that makes me drawn to it like a moth to flame.  That lure is now spilling over to my job here at One By One Media.  I have taken One By One Media to the television.  In my own mind anyway.  I am feeling like Johnny Carson these days doing his thing.

I started Social Mediasphere TV as more of an experiment than anything.  I was already doing the Blog Talk Radio show for Social Mediasphere and then the show sort of transmogrified into what it is now.  I can speak into a camera much easier than I can actually write.  I can speak and it does not set off the spelling alarm.  I can look into the camera and know that I am talking to people. I don’t get that same feeling with the blog. It could just be that I am a child of television and it helps my ADD and other problems associated with growing up with Gilligan’s Island.   I am not certain it will continue on its current path but for now stay tuned.

Twoogle?

twoogleI am trying to wrap my had around the idea that Google may possibly be the next owner of our beloved golden child in the world of social media, Twitter.  Are we ready yet to turn the keys to the Twitter kingdom over to the folks at Google?  I have been a serious watchdog lately it seems talking about Twitter ethics and the gaming of Twitter and the eroding of all things pure about the application.

How about if we turn it over to Google and make it a part of that empire?  I know Techcrunch talked about it in terms of Twitter search and that it is becoming the real time search engine.  It makes sense actually and since they turned down the money offered by Facebook due to valuation issues and Facebook’s stock, I think it could be said Google has the bank account for it.  Google and the leadership at Twitter have had dealings in the past with Blogger so in fact there may already be that relationship.  We will see how this unfolds.  I am hoping to get some further analysis from some of the people in our industry to help me grasp the idea but for now I will just try to fathom a life of Twoogle.

Update:  You can read more about it at Techrunch and the rest of the folks on Techememe.

Social Mediasphere TV Launched

smtv-logo1-300x177I have recently launched Social Mediasphere TV and added it to my list of blogs including this one and including Bloggers For Hire in the long list of blogs I contribute to and provide.  Social Mediasphere TV is an extension of the radio I was doing on Blog Talk Radio.  You can still go over and take a look at my archives at that location and I may still continue my on location live radio using that service as it seems to be a very simple solution to the technical issues related to live radio.

I will be doing my show continuing here forward on Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m. PST and 8:00 p.m. EST.  We will be discussing all things Social Media and as always we will have special guests, commentary and even you as listener can call in and ask questions make your own comments or just be a guest yourself.  I am still working through all of the issues with using the applications of the trade, but I have been given some good advice and help from many friends that are cheering me on to make this new project a success.  See you all on Tuesdays!

One By One Media Heading South For The Winter

Perhaps that is not as much of a migration as it is a business trip for me.  I am headed to Miami tomorrow to speak at Wordcamp Miami and attend BarCamp Miami and Future of Web Apps ’09.

I will be speaking at Wordcamp Miami as I did in Las Vegas on "Blogging for A Living", it is a presentation that I have given a number of times and therefore I wont have to prepare more than my usual, but more importantly, and perhaps more fun I will be doing a live radio show from BarCamp Miami courtesy of my client i-Lighter.

You can follow along and be a part of things as well.  My show Social Mediasphere via Blog Talk Radio will have the live coverage of the event.  This is my first try at doing a live radio show, although I have been on Blog Talk Radio live while I was at Blog World Expo last year.

I’ll be interviewing attendees, speakers and whoever might happen by the table.  I have been sent some podcasting equipment and I will be hopefully not embarrassing myself with my non-technical skills.  You can join in on the fun.  I want to have as many people participate as possible.

After the fun on Sunday at Barcamp Miami, I’ll be attending the fun at FOWA ’09 or the Future of Web Apps.  This event has some real dynamite personalities that are speaking at the event and hopefully I will get a few of them to stop by and be a part of the live radio show as well.  This show will be done on Blog World Expo Radio via the Blog Talk application as well so I would really enjoy it if you participated.  I will be live blogging the event as I can via the Blog World Expo Blog so stay tuned.
